Sticks & Stones
Anti-bullying Programme
helping children to live happier lives

Patricia Kennedy of Sticks & Stones was one of 40 social entrepreneurs, shortlisted from over 200 applicants, who gathered in Dublin on the 27th March 2012 to participate in SEI’s Bootcamp event,
a key stage in the award process. Speaking at the Bootcamp,
CEO Sean Coughlan said, "There is nothing more powerful than an individual with an
idea who is out there making it happen. Today we met 40 of the leading social entrepreneurs
who are making a real difference in their communities. This is needed now more than ever."
Sticks & Stones was awarded a grant from The Community Foundation for Ireland to create "Safe for Everyone" a workshop that specifically addresses homophobic bullying.
Sticks and Stones Anti-bullying Programme provides creative anti-bullying solutions in Irish schools. We are a
theatre-in-education social enterprise that helps children and teenagers,
teachers and parents to acknowledge, challenge and prevent bullying by
providing anti-bullying drama workshops and talks for primary and post-primary
students, parent's groups, and other stakeholders engaged in promoting
tolerance and social inclusion in society.

Schools
Our workshops aim to heighten awareness of bullying in all its guises, reveal the misery it inflicts and help break the silence that ensures its continuance. Drama is again proving to be a key element in getting young people to participate and engage with the issues. Using a combination of in-depth discussion, communication exercises, role-play and Forum Theatre our facilitators encourage them to explore and articulate their feelings and attitudes towards bullying. Our approach is not to attribute blame to individuals, but to look at the class holistically and to examine the group dynamics at play. It is intensive and participative - your students will never again be able to say: “It was only a joke”.
Our format encourages pupils to take personal responsibility for their actions, and equips them with the skills to address bullying in their environment. We do this by giving them the knowledge and skills to problem solve for themselves. We work to ensure that your students have;
- the ability to recognise bullying
- the confidence to challenge it
- and the skills to handle it.
Access to our on-line handbook written by Professor Mona O’Moore, Head of The Education and Child Psychology Department in Trinity College Dublin, will be provided as added support for each school. This contains valuable advice for teachers: how to identify and deal with bullying in the classroom, along with useful post-workshop exercises for the class to participate in. It also contains advice for parents, which we recommend you circulate prior to, or following, the workshop.
Each facilitator is experienced in facilitating groups to develop positive interventions and awareness raising strategies.
Parents
In response to requests from parent's groups, we also offer a forum for parents to discuss their concerns around the issue. An experienced facilitator from our team will deliver a highly interactive talk, providing the audience with a thorough background, and ample time for questions and answers. These talks are increasingly popular, particularly as part of Parent's Association's AGMs.
Bookings
We are currently taking bookings for this academic year 2012/13. To guarantee your preferred date please book as soon as possible.
